It has been a while since my training days in couple's therapy, so I was happy to hear about a resource that a lot of couple's therapists are recommending their clients, and even reading to enrich their own relationhips. Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love, by Dr. Sue Johnson is a tremendous book. Dr. Johnson is one of the founders of Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and has extensive therapy and research experience working with couples. This book is written for the lay person to read alongside therapy, or instead of therapy, for the purpose of improving and strengthening romantic relationships. Without going in to too much detail, Dr. Johnson talks about the role of attachment (early emotional bonds we form that direct us in all future relationships) in romantic relationships, and how to be aware of and modify behavior to form and solidify attachment bonds with your partner.
